African Marimba Workshops For Corporate & Team Building Activities
African marimba ensembles are comprised of soprano, tenor and baritone marimbas. The sopranos hold the melody, the tenors add a rhythmic backing and the baritones hold the beat. Together, the three instruments produce lovely rhythms and music.
Playing African music on the marimba is fun and energizing, and it's a great way to bring a team or any group of individuals closer together. The group gets to experience how each of the parts contribute to the overall sound – and the importance of each melody and instrument in creating the music.
All players must listen to one another, and ensure what they’re playing complements the total sound being produced, creating a clear understanding of teamwork and the importance of overall unity.
I teach by ear, the traditional African way, enabling learners to more freely engage their senses and be present in the music as a whole. Marimba team building sessions currently accommodate up to 11 people at a time, using 3 sopranos, 3 tenors and 2 baritone marimbas. The class is typically one hour long, and requires absolutely no previous experience or knowledge of playing the marimba or of African music.
WHAT Will You LEarn?
The repertoire I teach includes music and rhythms from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana primarily, with material from other parts of Africa too. This includes original compositions, folk songs and contemporary covers.
To add depth and dimension to the music, I also like to include a bit of traditional call-and-response singing, with the option of also learning how to play hosho patterns using traditional Zimbabwean shakers, clapping patterns, drumming and dance movements where relevant and/or desired.
I always like to share the background behind the songs I teach as well, so participants gain a historical and cultural understanding behind the songs they learn.
